Air Filter Replacement in La Mesa, CA

Air filter replacement in La Mesa homes

Much of La Mesa is postwar tract housing with original galvanized trunk-and-branch duct in attics and under raised floors. In those houses the filter rarely sits at the furnace. It lives behind a hinged hallway ceiling grille, or a wall return near the living room. Some homes have two returns. Only one ever gets changed.

Fit matters more than the rating printed on the box. Nominal sizes run smaller than the slot. A gap at the edge lets air slide past unfiltered. That bypassed air is what coats the blower wheel and the coil. In horizontal attic units with no retaining wire, the filter sags and opens a channel along the top.

Thicker pleated media is not automatically better. Returns in older homes here are often small for the equipment installed later. A dense filter on an undersized return raises static pressure. It starves the coil and makes the grille whistle. A deeper media cabinet fixes that. A stiffer one-inch filter does not.

Filters also mask other faults. Canyon grading and dirt shoulders east of town load them quickly. Regional smoke events add to it. If the farthest bedroom still runs warm with a fresh filter in place, look at flex kinked over attic joists or a boot that fell off its take-off.
